Phaster

Phaster! Phaster! Until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death!

The Box:

One of the machines that I'm running Linux at home on is a DEC Alpha UDB (Universal Desktop Box). It's really a Multia, but since I'm not running Windows NT on it, I have to call it a UDB. Go figure... The UDB name sounds tougher than Multia anyway.

I used Phaster as my primary workstation at work for over a year and loved every minute of it. Of course, having a 21" monitor to use with it was great too. It certainly made things look nice with the 4MB video card I was using in it at the time as well. I was NFS mounting my home directory off of another Linux box, "Tango", which was also the main mail server for the company. It was also doing DNS for the internal network, as well as quite a few other things, but it sat in the machine room on a shelf so I couldn't sit it on my desk. Phaster was doing secondary DNS internally, as well as providing a platform to do some porting/testing by some of the developers there.

One of the other cool things about this box was that I had it tucked up close to the side of the monitor and it couldn't be seen without looking around the side of the monitor. People would often ask where the computer was. Hitachi makes a nice big monitor.

I purchased it from DCG Computers. Steven Gaudet was a big help with a few of the problems that I had setting it up. I've also gleaned a bunch of useful information off of these links:

I'm currently running the Redhat 6.0 Linux/Alpha distribution on it.
